The Concerto Competition

November 22, 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM, Comey Recital Hall

Students taking private lessons at William & Mary have the opportunity each fall semster to prepare a concerto with piano accompaniment. The winner(s) will perform with the symphony in the first concert of the spring semseter. The competition phase is unlikely to be open to the public.

The Composition Competition
For the Composition competition, entrants must be a W&M student studying with a member of the Applied Music Faculty in the Department of Music. Participants must submit final scores to Professor Grandis (dfgrandis@wm.edu) by December 10. It is imperative to check the orchestration available for your piece early in the process (currently 3233-4331-hp-timp+2-str). Duration shouldn’t exceed 10 minutes. The winner will have their piece performed by WMSO at the Concerto Competition.

Chamber Groups
Players can form smaller ensembles composed of other orchestra members (for credit, a faculty advisor is required). Ensembles have the opportunity to perform at smaller events or participate in community outreach.

Other Ensembles
There are a ton of other ensembles offered at William & Mary! You may find a catalogue of them on the wm.edu site here. (Members of the orchestra are often also part of other music ensembles!)
