AUDITION INFORMATION
Auditions are open to students of all majors at William & Mary. All prospective and returning members must audition for a place in the ensemble.
How can I auditon after initial fall auditions?
Contact Professor Grandis at dfgrandis@wm.edu explaining your situation and he will determine if an audition may take place.
The Essentials
Each audition lasts no more than 15 minutes. Prepare to play…
- A 5 minute solo work/excerpt on your primary instrument
- Excerpts (linked below) for your primary instrument
—
Auxiliary Instruments
If you wish to demonstrate special proficiency in a second instrument (ex. piccolo, english horn, bass clarinet, etc.), auxiliary instruments are welcome, but not required.
—
What are we playing?
Percussion will be playing Glockenspiel excerpts from Dukas, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.
All other instruments will play excerpts from Rimsky-Korsakov, Scheherazade.
Anyone interested in the position of concertmaster will have specific excerpts to play linked below, and will not have to learn the violin 1 excerpts.
—
Where can I find the sheet music?
Below, or in this folder. Percussion players may choose to audition with the Glockenspiel excerpts, or bring a piece of their choice. Piano players may bring a piece of their choice.
—
Quick tip!
Audition excerpts are marked by red brackets and a corresponding excerpt number. The music within the brackets is all that’s required to be played in Scheherazade. The concertmaster excerpts do not have these brackets, and should be played in full.
