AUDITION INFORMATION
Auditions are open to students of all majors at William & Mary. All prospective and returning members must audition for a place in the ensemble. Auditions occur in the first week of the Fall semester.
The Essentials
Each audition lasts 10 minutes.* Prepare to play…
- A 5 minute solo work/excerpt on your primary instrument
- Excerpts (linked below) for your primary instrument
—
*concertmaster auditions last 20 minutes.
Auxiliary Instruments
If you wish to demonstrate special proficiency in a secondary instrument (ex. piccolo, english horn, bass clarinet, etc.), you may elect to audition with it alongside your primary instrument. Auxiliary instruments are welcome but not required.
—
What are we playing?
Percussion will be playing Glockenspiel excerpts from Dukas, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.
All other instruments will play excerpts from Rimsky-Korsakov, Scheherazade.
—
Where can I find the sheet music?
Below, or in this folder. Percussion players may choose to audition with the Glockenspiel excerpts, or bring a piece of their choice. Piano players may bring a piece of their choice.
—
Quick tip!
Audition excerpts are marked by red brackets and a corresponding excerpt number. For your excerpts, you will play from music strictly within the brackets.
—
Aspiring concertmasters, please note…
You must sign up for two audition slots if you intend on auditioning for concertmaster. One will be to perform the concertmaster excerpts, the other will be to perform the standard violin 1 excerpts. Concertmaster specific excerpts must be played in full.
—
Is it too late to audition…?
Contact our director, Professor Grandis, at dfgrandis@wm.edu. He will try to accommodate your request and has historically accepted new members mid-season.
